Java interview questions

My referers log shows that a lot of people are looking for interview questions about Java (and they end up here).

I think this is pretty weird. It almost sounds like cheating to me. "I will probably not know the answers, so I'll study a list of prechewed questions on beforehand." Is it not better to know your trade (or "craft" as the Guild of Pragmatic Programmers call it) instead of trying to hide your ignorance from your future boss?

On the other hand, it is only the bosses that believe in this "trick question interview method" that will be fooled. And if you really know your trade, you won't want to work for these guys. You'll want to work for cluefull bosses, that acknowledge that it is not what you know, but what you are able to learn, that determine your value. Read that last sentence again. It is not the length of your skills listing that counts, but the ability to extend that list. You'll never have all the skills that are listed, but if you can master them, a cluefull boss will hire you.

Let me share a memory with you: for my first Java job, the interviewer (I won't tell you who it was -- but he is on my blog roll) drew 2 balloons on a whiteboard. "This is your pc, and this is yahoo.com. You enter http://www.yahoo.com in your browser. What happens?" And I was off for 45 minutes of staggering and explaining TCP/IP and DNS and whatnot. However, the real interview was not whether I had everything right, but how I went into dialogue with the interviewer, and how we reasoned together to an explanation. This dialogue was the main reason I signed for his company (we write 1999, a "young potential" just had to pick a job), and I've never regretted that. No better environment than a bunch of intelligent people to enhance your intelligence. But I digress...

The point I want to make is that it makes no sense to go surf the net for interview questions. If the interviewer wants to rely on these mind tricks, you won't be happy working for him. And on the other hand, if you can't answer these mind tricks adequately (not: correctly! but: adequately) without looking them up first, you'll probably fall through in the first month at your new job.

I'll end with a warning note: don't read in the above that your current skill set isn't important. Heck, I'm pretty proud of my own list. Don't think "OK, I'll learn new stuff when I get a new job then." You chose for IT. The main part of the rest of your career is going to be to learn. Live with it, or find another craft you're good at.

I strongly and sincerely believe this will help you more than searching the Internet for interview questions.

    April 21st, 2008 at 10:17 PM Puleeeeease, spare us your pious "thoughts and feelings". Here in the US, we are hemorrhaging developer jobs. The bay area has become a wasteland and the north east is a disaster. Name a major financial institution in this country and I guarantee that they have plans in place right now to ship 10 - 20 percent of their development workforce off to a campus in India, China, etc.. in the next couple of years. There have been stories in every major media outlet over the last six months detailing accounts of programmers 'training their foreign replacements' (http://www.pbs.org/now/politics/jobflight.html)- you might want to check out nomoreh1.com for details. I have had several friends - solid programmers with many years of experience, degrees, etc. - who have been unable to find work over the last couple of years. Some of these guys have families, elderly parents, etc. One fellow, in particular, recently had to move out of his apartment of five years in SF because he could not find a stable job in the field: this despite having a degree in cs from Princeton. How should these guys - desperate for a steady income, sweating it out the night before an important interview, hoping to find a couple of thoughtful interview questions to help them prep - how should they 'think and feel' about your snide 'it almost sounds like cheating to me' comment? These guys generally don't have the option of picking and choosing potential bosses based on their affinity for 'mind-trick' questions. Furthermore, what about those who merely want to get their heads back into an area they have not worked in for some time? On my last contract, I spent around 6 months straight developing XSL/XML/XSD - no jdbc, no ejb, no pl/sql. It was a good assignment, but in the end, I needed to do some review to get my head back into j2ee technologies - and I have neither the time, nor interest in reading a few thousand pages of O'Reilly to get myself current. Is this cheating? Finally, a dozen or so 'mind trick' questions can often reveal gaps in understanding that the average half hour 'tell me about how the internet works' bull session will not. If I need a developer to hit the ground running on an MQSeries based project, I am going to want to ask a few pointed questions about messaging and I'm going to expect him, armed with the knowledge that this job involves this technology, to have done some review before coming in. Take a minute to consider your audience next you post these sanctimonious blogs - consider where they are and don't forget that you could easily find yourself in the same position at some point in the future.

Most of them even don't look very american to me... Also, generalizations are bad. But prose like "most of..." and "a lot of...." doesn't read very well, does it? But I didn't say "every" and "all" either. If I want to hire a developer, I don't want to know if she knows everything already. I want to know if she's capable of learning everything fast enough. In one year's time, her knowledge portfolio as it is today will be outdated anyway, and she will only be valuable if she was able to keep up. That is, of course, assuming that we're going for long-term relationships here, not the short-term "I'll suck your knowledge and dump you back on the street" contracts that you seem to like. And which, accidentally, I believe to be the root cause of the US (and not only there, rest assure) IT problems you describe. Preaching on the one hand "my friends don't find jobs, the poor bastards" and on the other hand "if I hire somebody, he has to know everything in advance", seems at least a bit inconsequent to me. As for the "sanctimonious" part: this indeed is "thoughts and feelings", not "my religion" or even "thoroughly studied observations and truths". That's why I choose the title. In fact, I like your comment, because it has indeed made me see things from a different perspective. That doesn't mean I'm not allowed to still disagree with you, though. As for "the same position": if you think Europeans didn't get fired in the dotcom shake-out, think again. Has it occurred to you that I might have been in that position already? And indeed, I really hope I won't live that experience again. But that wasn't the point of my post. There are others (http://www.wordsoup.com/word/archives/001102.html) who make that point. Go talk to them. And BTW, thanks for not concluding your comment with "pls send me these interview questions".

I totally agree with you that the ability to learn faster and to keep up with market requirements is far more desirable than a person who has every tip and tricks of JAVA on his fingertips..... And I also notice the various people who have posted the same, monotonous messages that go " CAN YOU PLEASE SEND ME JAVA QUESTIONS?".... and, you were right about them not being american. To be totally honest with you, I am also one among them, in the sense that I belong to the same country. But, one thing that appalls me is teh fact that noone actually took the time to read the article, and instead, just post the same messages over and again. and, to be honest again, these kind of people invariably end up with some of the best paying jobs, and do the run-in-the-mill thing of working and coming back home... so, are these the kind of people that companies are looking for? if not, then why do companies hire these peopel based on what they pretend to know, and not on their aptitude to perform and excel at their jobs??? I wonder....

U seem intelligent enough so i leave it up to you to realize that there's NO SUCH THING. Secondly, it was all well and good when the rest of the world was loosing their jobs and the local economies were suffering because of teh multinational companies that were selling their products at cut throat prices. This was all a OK with all you "AMERICAN" people coz everyone here was earning a boat load of money. So stop crying over the inevitable and realize that all of this has nothing to do with AMERICAN or NON-AMERICAN and has everything to do with ECONOMICS. As for send me those JAVA questions, i realize that is a foolish statement to make and i agree with you, though not in the sense that all these people are incapable NON-AMERICAN fools.

I have to confess that, i came to this site while searching for Java questions.. but after reading this article, my mind changed regarding this. But, you know, what you mentioned does have its implications. Lets take myself as an example. I like working in Perl/PHP a lot and that is what i am working on right now. But, in this IT industry, atleast in my country, there is no future for such technologies. It is sad, but true. Most of the good companies that hire ask for Java and that is what prompted me to rethink and apply to such companies. Some may say, its following the horde but i see it as following the only option i have :) . And, to prepare for a good java interview, we NEED to go through these questions as 1) It is a faster way to learn the intricacies of Java 2) Well, if the employers are asking these questions, it will surely help getting the job. To tell the truth, I have learnt more about Java looking at these interview questions than reading any tutorials :P. That said, it is very sad to see people posting comments asking about INTERVIEW QUESTIONS in the very blog which says not to do it. To all of those, please read the article instead of just posting inane comments. Also, it is sad to see that most of the posters are from the same country as I am.

    April 21st, 2008 at 10:17 PM Hi Tom, Its was really nice to read your article and realise that I am really not alone [or an extremist] to think that its not really syntax, but the basic ability to learn and to make things work that counts. However, I would also like to point out that it is very difficult to ask the right kind of questions that would bring out the true ability of a person to work. Its very easy to ask the difference between an Arraylist and a Vector. But its difficult to judge whether a person can really pick up and implement a new technology in a few hours. A few years ago I was a very successful programmer in my company and all the managers I had worked with could vouch that this girl can actually learn and implement a new technology within minutes, and the deliverables would be of excellent quality. Unfortunately, I had to move to a different city and look for another job. When I started giving interviews, they asked me questions like 'How has java internally implemented StringBuffer' and 'Is an object of the String class in java mutable?'. Not a single person asked me logical questions, or tried to judge my ability to grasp new concepts, or even asked me how I had managed to take on a task of writing a printer driver [even though I knew nothing about the embedded technology at that time]. Fortunately, even though I took a long time to find a job, I found a good job eventually and I proved myself once again out here. Nowadays I take interviews for my company, and I try to go beyond judging a person on syntax level or what the person currently knows. Your article has struck a cord in me and it will keep reminding me that intelligence in this world is not completely gone. Thanks, Priya.

The reason why u see the above messages is that, they want to get knowledge soon and fast.they have no time to go through any person's personal opinions.all they want is info on java and if not found here will keep searching till their goal is reached.
