"Flaws" in open source

April 20th, 2004

Hear, hear. Most OSS developers develop for fun. If this ain't what you're looking for, go look somewhere else. And try to understand the above sentence: we develop for the fun of developing. Just like you collect stamps for the fun of collecting. Or do you want to tell me that you want to earn money with that?

Most of the other ASF contributors, and myself, make their money using what they develop for open source projects. Yes, I enjoy coding, and I enjoy working on various open source projects. I get paid very well for my work as a programmer (my title is much fancier on my business cards, but that is, in the end, what I do). There are joke projects and there are good projects. This is no different from the COTS world, however. However, it is different in at least one huge way -- it is very easy to do a spot audit before comitting to using a library. -Brian ps: Oh, and I have never earned money from stamp collecting, but I have fro mother hobbies like backpacking and rock climbing ;-)

Understanding the wheel I just read a post titled ' So what if we choose to write software for geeks ' [via Feelings and Thoughts ]... It may be true that you don't need to recreate the wheel, but you don't truly understand the wheel until you have recreated it. Lik
