Bloglines

July 1st, 2004

I've just switched from an outdated rss2email (great utility, but no atom support, and the new version didn't work out on my WinXP machine) to Bloglines. It looks like the best I'm going to be able to get in my current configuration (involving multiple locations with lots of firewalls and NATs). Bloglines seems to be pretty good nowadays. It imported my OPML file without a single hickup, and keeps my blogroll automatically up-to-date. The most immediate downside to me: you can't mark individual blog items as "read", you've always "read" a whole blog. Quite a big granularity, when you're catching up on two weeks of Erik.

About 2 weeks ago I discovered RSS Bandit. Rss Bandit is the only rss aggregator I’ve seen untill now that stores the read status of your feeds on an ftp or webdav account. So, it is possible to synchronize between work and home. The only problem I discovered is that some feeds give errors when your proxy server requires auhtentication. But a developer of this open source project told me that the fix for this is allready included in CVS, so it will be solved in the next release.

I did put the link to the Rss Bandit website as html in my previous post, but apparently the system removed it. So, here is the link: http://www.rssbandit.org/

RSS Bandit requires the .NET framework to run. We're not allowed (nor able) to install stuff like that at work. Thanks for the suggestion though! It looks like many people are very enthusiastic about RSS Bandit.
